What Is an MCP Server? A Plain-English Guide for Ecommerce

Updated October 19, 2026 · Custom MCP

Short answer: An MCP server is a secure connector that lets AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude read data from outside systems. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard. For an ecommerce business, an MCP server can give the AI read-only access to your Shopify, Amazon and ad numbers, so it answers with your real data instead of guessing.

How it works, in three steps

  1. The server holds the connection to your data, such as Shopify orders, Amazon settlements and ad spend.
  2. You add its private link to ChatGPT or Claude as a connector, once.
  3. When you ask a question, the AI asks the server for the numbers it needs and writes the answer from them.

Why it matters for ecommerce teams

Most store data is spread across Shopify Analytics, Seller Central, Meta Ads Manager, Google Ads and spreadsheets. An MCP server lets one AI conversation draw on all of them, so you stop exporting and reconciling reports by hand.

Off-the-shelf vs custom MCP servers

Off-the-shelf servers usually connect one platform and use its definitions. A custom server joins several sources and applies your own rules, for example net revenue, cost of goods, Amazon fees and how you measure ROAS, so every answer is counted the way your team counts.

Frequently asked questions

Is MCP only for developers?

No. Someone has to build the server, but using it is just asking questions in ChatGPT or Claude in plain English.

Does my data go to OpenAI or Anthropic?

Only the figures needed to answer each question are sent to the AI tool, not your whole database. Business plans such as ChatGPT Business and Claude Team don't use conversations for training by default.

Which AI tools support MCP?

Claude and ChatGPT both support custom MCP connectors, as do other AI tools. Some require a paid plan to add one.
